How To Prevent Cold Or Flu And What To Do If You Get It

by hartteuser Leave a Comment

Getting Sick Simply Sucks!

I can say this because that is exactly how I felt… shitty. Now that I am at the end of it, I wanted to share some information that could save you from suffering. Prevent cold or flu here.

So here it is – some useful information about how to prevent the cold or flu and what to do if you get it.

What Is A Cold?

A cold is an upper respiratory infection caused by a virus.

Common Cold Symptoms include a runny nose, sneezing, coughing, congestion, fatigue and sometimes, with accompanying body aches. Basically – you feel miserable.

You don’t want to be around people and vice versa.

What Is The Flu?

The flu is also an upper respiratory infection caused by a virus.

Flu Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, fatigue, chills, sore throat, cough, runny or stuffy nose. Sometimes there is also mental confusion, ear infections or plugged ear, nausea, and vomiting.

Basically, it comes out both ends if you know what I mean!

Flu can transition into pneumonia, which is why we want to treat it right away so it doesn’t progress.

How Can I Prevent Cold Or Flu?

Prevent infection by making your body inhospitable to microbes.

The whole premise of this statement is to change the environment that supports the growth of these viruses.

As Pasteur said so infamously on his deathbed, ‘The microbe is nothing; the environment is everything.“

Your body is the environment I am referring to.

Let’s first look at factors that increase your susceptibility to infection:

Your Diet

‘You don’t GET a cold – you EAT it’!

DIET: Avoid a diet high in refined grain and sugar.

Why? Refined, heavily processed carbohydrates feed microbes and encourage them to flourish. Sugar feeds cancer and lowers your resistance to fight infection.

DIET: Check for food allergy or sensitivities.

Why? Eating foods that you are allergic or sensitive to create whole body inflammation. A key driver to all disease and illness.

Metabolic Imbalances

METABOLIC IMBALANCE: Check for Low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria).

Why? Many infections enter through our mouth. Even the ones we inhale get trapped in our mucous, which is then coughed up and swallowed. These microbes need to find their way into an ‘acid’ stomach bath – which kills them.

METABOLIC IMBALANCE: Check for Low thyroid function (hypothyroidism).

Why? When you have a low thyroid, everything in the body slows down. This includes your ability to fight infections too.

Low Micronutrient Status

LOW MICRONUTRIENT STATUS: Poor immune function

Why? Your body needs to have enough zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D, and selenium for a proper immune response. Being low in any one of these micronutrients sets the stage for low immune function.

LOW MICRONUTRIENT STATUS: Low vitamin D.

Why? We see more infections in the winter months than the summer partly due to lack of being outside and getting natural sunlight.

Toxicity

TOXICITY: Check for Chemical exposure.

Why? Our body uses enzymes to function. Chemicals block enzymes and inhibit function. This is ‘bad news bears’ when it comes to being optimal. Chemicals also increase inflammation, a key driver to disease.

Avoiding And Treating Infections – Take The 3 Pronged Approach

Prevent cold or flu by doing this.

#1: Make the body’s environment as inhospitable as possible for pathogenic viruses.

Eat a diet that mimics your ancestors: Meat, fish, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and berries. Enjoy on occasion fruit; whole grains, and dairy. All foods free from toxic chemicals (eaten ideally organic or spray free); and properly raised or grown.

At the very least, think about what your grandma ate and just eat that way.

Grains, nuts, and seeds should be soaked or sprouted to avoid gut irritants (known immune suppressants). My book, The Fit n Healthy Plan, The healthy diet & lifestyle plan made easy

The Fit n Healthy Plan literally walks you through step by step what an ancestral diet is and how to incorporate it into your busy life. Includes easy instructions on how to soak your grains, nuts, and seeds too.

BONUS: This plan works by balancing your body’s metabolic systems while naturally removing the unwanted toxins that contribute to modern day diseases.

Check for low stomach acid. Test yourself by clicking this link: Low Stomach Acid Questionnaire.

Check for low thyroid. Test yourself by clicking this link: Low Thyroid Test Questionnaire.

Get your micronutrient test done. Sample Micronutrient Test. Go to this link to find out how: Micronutrient Test.

Do a detox. How toxic are you? Test yourself by going here: ADP Detox Questionnaire

Stay warm. Pathogens thrive in cold environments. Heat destroys them.

Stay hydrated and drink clean water. A good rule of thumb: Consume 1 litre of filtered water for every 50 lbs of body weight. Drink away from meals.

Practice good dental hygiene. I personally think not enough attention is given to good dental practices. Dental decay is a marker symptom of other diseases and metabolic imbalances including unhealthy digestive function. Brush teeth twice daily, Remembering to floss also. Oil pulling is a strategy that I’ve been doing every morning to keep my mouth clear of pathogens.

Oil pulling, also known as “kavala” or “gundusha,” is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth on an empty stomach for 4 – 20 minutes. This action draws out toxins in your body, primarily to improve oral health but also to improve your overall health. I use coconut oil and oil pull first thing in the morning while I make my organic cup of coffee.

After I perform my morning oil pull, I scrape my tongue.

Tongue scraping also known as Jihwa Prakshalana, is the Ayurvedic self-care ritual done as an oral hygiene practice that removes bacteria, food debris, fungi, toxins, and dead cells from the surface of the tongue.

The tongue is part of the first line of defense in your immune system. Scraping your tongue prevents toxins from being reabsorbed into your body and boosts overall immune function.

Take probiotics regularly. These are of proven benefit to keep your immune system healthy. Helps to prevent cold or flu. Look for probiotic made from human strains (not animal). Check out the HMF (human microflora) probiotics by Genestra.

#2: Treat infections aggressively.

Take vitamin C to bowel tolerance Take enough that is sufficient enough to cause loose stools. This kills infectious microbes AND takes the load off the gut to allow for more energy to optimize the immune system. Look for a NON GMO source like C1000 by Genestra

Take zinc – 25 to 40 mg. The primary role of zinc is to activate over 200 enzymes with a vital role in immune function and digestion. Look for zinc picolinate by Genestra.

Take yarrow. 30 drops in a little water, 3 -4 times a day. Yarrow is traditionally used in herbal medicine to relieve fever and colds. Look for organically grown and ideally from small farms for best results. Check out this Yarrow by Jardins La Val’heureuse

BONUS: More information on yarrow can be found in my blog post How I Stopped A Cold In One Day.

Take an herbal combination for colds/flus. This is great for children who don’t like to take supplements. Easy to administer. Simply place herbal drops in water or directly in the mouth. I personally use and recommend BIO – COLD/FLU by Jardins La Val’heureuse

Try a Master Tonic

Master tonic (aka Fire Cider) is a traditional folk remedy infused with powerful anti-microbial, decongestant, and circulatory herbs and spices.

Take 1 tbsp every hour until symptoms clear.

I took Daniels formula throughout the day for 4 days and not only did I really enjoy the taste, I felt it working with every shot.

As a preventative, take 1 tbsp every day.

You can contact Daniel by clicking here Its all about the gut

Master Tonic ingredients: Garlic, Ginger, Horseradish, Turmeric, Onion, Hot pepper

Master Tonics healing properties include: Anti viral, anti microbial, and anti parasitic

Switch to a low-carb Ketogenic Diet. Avoid grains, dairy, and limit fruit. Obviously, avoid all sugar!

Allow yourself to get a temperature. Viruses are very temperature sensitive. For a body to run a fever is a good thing as this event kills pathogenic viruses. Optimal temperature is 102.3 degrees Celsius.

DO NOT SUPPRESS SYMPTOMS – THEY ARE NATURES WAY OF FIGHTING INFECTIONS.

Get outside sunshine. Sunlight on bare skin kills microbes. In fact, getting natural sunlight not only increases our vitamin D levels, but it also cleans our blood. We knew this long ago when it was used as an effective treatment for tuberculosis.

Be good and kind to yourself. It’s OKAY to take some time off and just get to bed. Rest is one of your best medicines!

I Hope you’ve found this helpful to prevent cold or flu.

How I stopped a cold in 1 day (part 2 of 2)

by hartteuser Leave a Comment

Want to learn about the other 2 things I did to stop a cold in 1 day?

In my last blog post, I wrote about how to stop a cold in 1 day using bone broth.

You can find it here how I stopped a cold in 1 day

Today’s blog post is part 2 where I list the other two things I did to stop a cold.

But before I list them, I really want to draw attention to a few facts about bone broth that’s VERY IMPORTANT.

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT BONE BROTH EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW

#1. Don’t forget a very important ingredient.

When you make it yourself, there is a very important ingredient that must be added to draw the minerals from the bones into your broth.

Without this ingredient, you aren’t getting the glucosaminoglycans, those special molecules that keep your joints humming and bones strong.

You can find it in my bone broth recipe. Just click on the link below for your free copy.

DOWNLOAD MICHALE’S FREE RECIPE EBOOK

#2. Use cartilage rich joint material when choosing your bones.

While my bone broth recipe uses Chicken bones, the kind of animal doesn’t matter. Get organic when you can. Free range and grass fed are the best. The stuff that helps your joints the most comes from the cartilage rich joint material.

#3. You can just drink it!

No need to only use bone broth in soups. Just drink it! In fact, this is common practice around the world. Since the time of writing, I’ve been so impressed with ‘real life’ health benefits to bone broth that I’ve still kept to my ‘1 to 2 cups of bone broth’ as a daily habit.

Personally, I’ve found such great benefit to sipping this mineral-rich, immune supporting beverage, that I’ve purchased 6 containers, as back up, while I make my own. I found a great source at our local Farmers Market.

I frankly don’t want to run out! What I’ve particularly noticed is how much better my joints feel.

Change up the flavor and add ginger and ginseng. Heat it up and enjoy it like tea.

Which brings me to the 2nd thing I did to stop a cold in 1 day…..

Ginger

Ginger can take away the aches and pains of colds and flu. The major active ingredients in Ginger are the turpines and oleo-resin compounds called Gingerois. These are the two primary ingredients that have been identified to provide antiseptic, lymph-cleansing, along with a perspiration induced action that all works to clear the toxins OUT of the body. Ginger is also a classic herb used when inflammation needs to be quelled and healing to reinstate. This is also why ginger is so effective in arthritic conditions as well.

HOW TO USE GINGER TO STOP A COLD

Ginger is considered the ‘Winter Herb’ for many people living in cold climates. For that reason, I always have a fresh root on hand when I need it.

Use as a tea (fresh root or dried), or in capsule, or as a powder directly in the mouth.

GENERAL DOSAGE TO STOP A COLD 1.:

Infants to 3 years: Use Ginger tea in a bottle or cup, or given by dropper or teaspoon – 1 to 4 oz. up to four times a day. If any signs of diarrhea occur, then simply reduce amounts and frequency (from 4 times a day to 2 or 3 times a day). This happens because it is too stimulating to the intestines. No harm done:)

Children 4 years to 10 years. Ginger tea, 1 to 4 cups a day as desired. Or 1/2 to 1 tsp Ginger powder added to some hot water, honey and lemon. Children ages 6+ can take Ginger tincture, 10 drops, up to 4 times a day.

Children 11 years to Adults. No limits here. Ginger can be taken as often and as strong as preferred. If diarrhea occurs, simply reduce amounts and frequency. Again, no harm done (only likely a good ‘clean out’).

Adolescence can take Ginger tincture, 15 drops 4 times a day and Adults 30 drops, 4 times a day.

You can shop for Ginger tincture here

Ginger tincture is traditionally used in Herbal Medicine to help relieve digestive upset, including lack of appetite, nausea, digestive spasms, indigestion, dyspepsia and flatulent colic (carminative).

I personally pinched off a nail size piece of whole fresh ginger and chewed it. I did this 4 times that day when I stopped my cold in 1 day. Strong but obviously very effective.

However, it is always a good health strategy to keep Ginger tincture on hand when you need it fast.

The last thing I did to stop a cold in 1 day was take Yarrow Tincture.

Yarrow

If you are struggling with a cold or flu, and you’re looking for a natural remedy – Yarrow is probably on of the best herbs for the job.

I’ve written about Yarrow and how it’s one of the best cold and flu remedies out there.

Find my article here Natural Remedy for Cold and Flu. There’s additional info about other health applications if you want to dive in deeper.

Some interesting facts about Yarrow:

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), is one of the most common wayside herbs, grown in many places throughout North America.

Properties of Yarrow: Bitter, Stimulant, Anti inflammatory, Astringent, Diuretic, Diaphoretic, Tonic, Emmenagogue, and Alternative

Yarrow is often put in the ‘bitter’ category of herbs. Due to the extremely powerful volatile oil (Achillein). This oil, together with it’s tannic acid, gives it a stimulating, anti inflammatory, astringent effect.

Yarrow is also a natural diuretic, so when consuming yarrow tea, be prepared to hit the washroom several times a day. In fact, this is exactly what happened to me. But hey, I kicked my cold in 1 day!

Yarrow also helps bring on a sweat (diaphoretic). In fact, you could support a fever with it and assist the body’s natural healing response to infection this way.

GENERAL DOSAGE TO STOP A COLD 2.

Infants to 3 years: Yarrow tea or infusion offered in a bottle or cup, by dropper, or by teaspoon, usually 4 oz for the tea or 2 oz for the infusion, two to four times a day. Use Yarrow tincture according to formulators instructions.

Children 4 years to 10 years: Yarrow tea, 1 to 4 cups daily. Yarrow infusion, 2 to 4 oz, one to four times a day. Use Yarrow tincture according to formulators instructions.

Children 11 years to Adults: Yarrow tea as needed, usually not more than 8 cups per day (largest dose would be for fasting or extreme illness in adult). Yarrow infusion, 4 oz. as needed, usually not more than eight times a day.

I personally took my Yarrow tincture, 30 drops, 3 times a day. Trae, my 12 year old son takes 30 drops 1 time a day as a cold and flu preventative. This is how it can be applied as well. It tastes great (even Trae he likes it)

Why do we get a cold, flu, or any illness?

All of us are exposed to ‘bugs’ that cause these common ailments. The KEY is to keep the immune system working well to overcome them.

One of the best ways to keep your immune system working well is to keep your ‘filtering’ organs clean. These are your liver, kidneys, gut  and lungs. Congestion of these organs of elimination results in an overly toxic body. Which then lowers immune system leaving you more susceptible to disease or illness.

Toxicity→Congested liver, kidneys, gut, lungs→lowered immune system→colds/flu

One of the ways in which the bone broth, ginger, and yarrow worked to stop my cold in 1 day was that it flushed out the ‘acid’ toxins, contributing to my cold.

When thinking back, one of the main sources of my toxicity was lack of down time which resulted in sleepless nights (due to mind chatter). Sleeping is one of the primary ways in which we detoxify.

Anyways my point is that an over toxic body is why we get sick. Which is exactly why I went back to a better work/life balance. My sleep returned, I started my UNDA detox drops (for liver, kidney, and gut), kept up with my 1 to 2 cups of bone broth plus 30 drops of yarrow tincture 1 time per day (for preventative).

Natural remedy for a cold and flu

by hartteuser Leave a Comment

Yarrow

Common cold or flu got you down? Looking for a natural remedy for a cold and flu?

Stop your cold and get back to the gym (or yoga) by doing this……

Drink Yarrow tea.

Drinking 4 to 8 cups of yarrow tea, at the start of a cold or flu can help you recover quicker, faster.

This is exactly what I did – and it worked! (The attached photo is the yarrow I used, picked fresh from my backyard).

Yarrow – Natural remedy for a cold and flu

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), is one of the most common wayside herbs, grown in many places throughout North America.

I learned about the medicinal properties of Yarrow- just in time.

I started to come down with a cold and a good friend (Kenna Graff) mentioned how she cured her daughter’s cold in a day, drinking yarrow tea.

So I thought I`d give it a try and it worked! Now I am passing this information to you.

To get you familiar with Yarrow (and hopefully comfortable using it), here are it’s properties.

But hey, I kicked my cold in about 1-2 days! I am guessing one of the mechanism of actions was that it flushed out the ‘acid’ toxins, contributing to my cold.

Yarrow also helps bring on a sweat (diaphoretic). In fact, you could support a fever with it and assist the body’s natural healing response to infection this way.

The classic formula for colds and flus is yarrow, peppermint, and elderflower. Drink very hot. Then wrap up warmly, keeping a hot water bottle (bottom of feet) and wait to sweat.

I personally didn’t have peppermint and elderflower on hand, but, it still worked to stop my cold.

More applications for Yarrow

Cold and flu prevention: Drink 1 or 2 cups per day as a tonic. Yarrow is a medicinal herb considered to be one of the most valuable herbs in the world. Yarrow is especially known for its action on the liver. It has been shown to strengthen the liver`s efficiency and stimulate bile production. You can drink it hot or room temperature. Try it in your morning green drink or smoothie instead of using water as a base (that’s what I have been doing lately).

Everyday cleanse: Start with 1 cup a day and slowly increase to 2 cups over a period of 2 weeks. Yarrow`s astringent medicinal properties helps firm and tone your body`s tissues. This is especially good news for those who are looking to reset their bad dietary habits or been exposed to a lot of toxins.

Coffee replacement: Yarrow`s `stimulating` properties also helps to rehabilitate the body`s systems with renewed alertness and immunity. This makes for a great morning coffee replacement.

Balances menstruation: Start with 1 cup of yarrow tea and increase an additional 1 cup until you reach up to 4 cups of yarrow tea a day. Try this over a period of 1 month and continue for 3 months. Doing so can promote menstrual balance. Yarrow can be used for menses that are too heavy or too light; spotting between cycles, or for those dreaded menstrual cramps (along with a good quality calcium/magnesium supplement during the day with additional magnesium at night).

Night sweats: Drink 1 cup of Yarrow tea (any preferred temperature) and 1 cup of cool (not cold) cup of Yarrow tea before bed.

How to make Yarrow tea

Dried Herb: Take 28 grams (1 ounce) of the dried herb, pour on 476 ml (1 pint) of boiling water, cover and steep for 5-10 minutes. Best to drink without added sweetener (to release the added benefits of the bitter properties). If you haven`t developed the taste for bitter herbs, then add a little honey or stevia.

Freshly gathered herb: If you start with freshly gathered undried Yarrow leaves, make sure you simmer it down, on the stove for 20-30 minutes, covered. Then strain and drink half a cup, 3 times a day. The leaves are edible. Simply toss them in your next veggie dish and enjoy!

Cautions:

Many midwives advise against using Yarrow during pregnancy as it can be extra stimulating to the uterus.

Summary

If you are struggling with a cold or flu, and you’re looking for a natural remedy – Yarrow is probably the herb for the job. Even if you are at the stage of vomiting, and nothing will go down, just sip yarrow tea. The idea is to take small doses at regular intervals. Even if you vomit the first bit out, keep on it. Drinking it cool usually helps in extreme cases.

I truly hope you get to know your yarrow and try it for yourself! I did and now it’s definitely part of my Fit n Healthy Plan!
